New YouTube Monetization Requirements and Views Inflation. Are They Connected?

YouTube doubled the Partner Program entry thresholds, then changed how public views are counted. A lot of articles have tied the two together. They are not the same number.

YouTube effectively doubled the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) entry thresholds.

RequirementCurrentFrom February 27th onwards
Subscribers1,0001,000
Watch hours (last year)4,0008,000
OR Shorts views (last 90 days)10 million20 million

Most small creators struggle to reach the current threshold, let alone double.

Views inflation

YouTube also announced it would be calculating views differently. No more minimum watch time for a view to count as a view. Views count even if the viewer swipes next immediately. Creators have noticed their view count dramatically increase.

Do the new “inflated” views count towards your monetization requirement?

No, contrary to what a lot of lazily written blogs and articles claim, YouTube clarified that public views (what you see on the video) are not what count toward getting monetized. Your requirements are calculated on “engaged views”, which means your video needs to have been watched for beyond the first few seconds, and loops do not count.

Is it still worth being a creator?

Yes, the new rules are a harder filter for spam and low quality content, meaning fewer players in the arena.

Avoid inauthentic and repetitive content. This is still the best time to build a channel identity with consistency.
